It is rainy season in Japan so it is raining today. I had an appointment with the dentist this morning. Usually, I rode a bicycle to get there on a fine day but I drove a car today. After that I went to the bank, went to the library to return some books, went shopping and got done some other errands while I was in the car.

Wow! You are so busy today. Are you always this busy? How long is the rainy season in Japan?

In my region, it usually starts in June. The rain front piles up above Japanese islands so the rainy season continues for one month or one month and a half. However we haven't had enough rain so far because of recent unusual dry weather. Generally, people feel that it is comfortable to live but farmers must be worried about the shortage of rain.

I understand, are there a lot of farm lands in your region? What month does farmers start planting rice?

The area where I live isn't farming area. It is a kind of commercial and residential area. But some small-scale farming exists in my city. So I see paddy field and dry field outside of town. The time of planting rice is very different from the region because Japanese islands spread from North to South. In my region, it did in the beginning of May.

I see, so that means crops are available all year round in Japan. What other crops do you see outside your city besides rice? Do people in your city have vegetable gardens in their backyards?

The Northern area in Japan is in subarctic zone and the Southern area is in the subtropical zone. So it might be a bit hard to crop in the Northern area in winter. People looks like planting variety of vegetables and fruits fitted the climate. People who has yard in my town regularly plants flowers and trees.
