Do you play any musical instruments?

I play Shamisen. It resembles banjos-- in fact I believe the existence of the historical bond between them--, but much smaller, and the body is box-shaped.
It sounds delicate when played with fingers, or gorgeous with a triangle plectrum.

1. Put a comma after the introductory phrase.
Oh really, that is quite an interesting choice of an instrument. When did you learn to play the Shamisen?

When I was in the university, or ten years ago, I joined a club for Japanese traditional music, and learned how to play this instrument.

Unlike guitar, Shamisen has no frets, giving players more free room for expressions, but making it different to play with an accurate pitch at the same time.

The strings resonate each other when a string is picked, and make strange harmony which some people say that is similar to the Sitar, an Indian instrument.

1. Add an article to refer to a specific noun (guitar).
2. Add the preposition "with" to say that people or things are in a place together or are doing something together.
3. "That" is not necessary in this context.
It really does sound lovely. How often do you have a chance to play it nowadays? Do you play it alone?

Nowadays I don't play it.
However, my mother takes lessons of Shamisen, so I often hear her singing along with playing.

1. This is a better expression.
2. "While" suits this context better.
Okay, I see. Why do you not play it anymore? Is it because of other life commitments? How good is your mother at playing it?

At first, I couldn't stand with her off-pitch sounds.
As I mentioned it before, Shamisen is a hard instrument in accurate pitches.
However she gradually got better at playing, now she has a certificate from a school to prove her achievement.

2. "It" is not necessary.
3. This is a better expression.
Wow, this is good. How many strings does the shamisen instrument have? What classification of the instrument is shamisen?

It has three strings; in fact its name means "three strings".
It's a kind of string instruments. More academically, it is classified as "spike box lutes".
