I heard that you're learning something. What is it like?

Needless to say, I have been learning English. In our country, Learning English begins at the first grade of junior high school in thirteen years old. I'm now 48 years old, so I have been learning it for almost 30 years. Nevertheless, my English skill has not achieved to the level which is needed on business or daily conversation. I recognize that learning English continues indefinitely.

I see. If you do not mind me asking, what could be the reason why it is not improving? Is the English taught in Japanese schools not good enough?

In my case, the most needed skill is listening. The reason why my listening skill has not improved so far will be lack of sufficient hours of listening native English. Also, it may depend upon the in born ability. My daughter is the second junior high school student and
she has studied English for just two years. She is superior to me in listening.

I guess the country is trying to correct the broken system by starting with the younger generation. This means the children will be better at speaking and listening to English.

Yes. As you said, the change of education system has begun and younger generation will start to study English. Furthermore, listening and speaking are weighted heavier than before. The present English education system has relatively focused on grammar and reading. I suppose the system is not necessarily false, because non-native speakers can't speak or listen without the basis of grammar and vocabulary. Also, reading has been main when we use English. For now, we are forced to achieve all the skills in English to make a good communication with foreigners in the global economy.

You are absolutely correct. For everything we learn, there is a need for a basic foundation in order for one to really understand. You are lucky to have your daughter who understands the language well, do you communicate with her in English to improve your skills?

Although I haven't try to do it with her so far, I guess that she would refuse my offer. She prefer playing the clarinet for her brass band club and making handcrafts to practicing English. Best Teacher is my unique method in English conversation.
IN addition to English, I started learning Chinese three years ago. I thought it's impossible to learn another language even though I can't master English. Once I started to learn, it's so interesting and I felt that we can learn the culture or characteristics through studying foreign language.

That is so amazing, well done to you for that. The beauty of learning various languages is that you become diverse and you get more opportunities compared to people who know a single language. How good are you at Chinese now?

The level of my Chinese remains at the the beginners' one. However, it's interesting for me to find one of the route of Japanese pronunciation in Chinese. The characters in Japanese are originated from Chinese. Although most Japanese know that, we don't notice that pronunciation in Japanese is partly similar to Chinese. It's an amazing for me to know that.
