What have you eaten in the past 10 - 12 hours?

I've eaten a broiled eel for lunch. It's a traditional Japanese viand, though eels are categorized into the endangered species. For dinner, I've gone to a restaurant of yakiniku, a Korean style barbecue. I've also drunken alcohol a lot, such as beer, wine, and makkolli. I shouldn't have eaten and drunken so much in a day. I have a heartburn today.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you'll feel better soon. Do you often eat out? I like to eat in restaurants sometimes. Do you think people in Japan prefer to eat at home or in restaurants?

Thanks a lot. As I'm unmarried and live alone in Tokyo, I often eat out. In rural areas like my home town, folks usually cook their own foods. But in Tokyo, we can enjoy cuisine from all over the world. There're numerous temptations here. I'm afraid that I had a gastroesophageal reflux disease, GERD. Acid from stomach may leak up into my esophagus.

Oh, that seems serious. Have you seen a doctor? Is medical care expensive in Japan?

Yes, my physician in charge had prescribed me some acid-suppressing drugs, as I'd had similar symptoms. After I had a full dose course of a proton pump inhibitor for 2 months, my symptoms lessened. Then he stepped down to a lower dose, and I've taken the drug as required. The medical expense in Japan is not so high. Well, I'll explain it in detail.

Japan achieved of universal health insurance coverage in 1961. Today, most of Japanese are covered by social health insurance, through 3500 plans according to where they are employed or where they reside. The system has worked towards implementation of egalitarian principles of equal treatment. But a concern is how to control health expenditures.

Although the issue seems to be difficult, it isn't somebody else's problem. If you or your family members were not properly insured, a financial matter may cause a serious problem in case of diseases or injuries. Medical bankruptcy in the US is notorious. As the economic outlook remains gloomy, the number of uninsured Japanese folks is increasing.
