Which country's trends do you think will impact the Japanese economy?

I'm afraid of American protectionalism. As you know, we are arguing about the TPP among countries facing pacific area. There is the biggest market in the USA. If they deny the TPP, our effort comes to nothing, maybe. I guess a free trade makes our lives easier and more comfortable, don't you think so?

Well, yes, in theory, I agree that free trade really helps. But it also creates problems for local producers. Right? Don't you agree?

I agree, but most people are annoyed by a few people who produce high cost crops or something. That's not efficient. In Japan, farming holds less than one percent of GDP. We don't have to keep it any longer. We can import everything to eat. We should make efforts to export the products which can be priced very high.

Yes, I agree with you completely but on the other hand what would happen if there is no food to import in the future? I think Japan should preserve domestic farmers.

That's right. I think that in order to keep Japanese farmers, it's not better to interrupt importing farms. Japanese farmers still have great advantage. They don't have to bring the farms to oversea. Thus, they don't have to pay a lot of transportation fee. This advantage makes them win the importers without any import restrictions or tax.

Good point, and in your opinion is Japan threatened by some other things that are going on in today's markets? I have heard that China is making a big impact on the world's steel industry, does that have influence on Japanese economy?

Exactly. In the past time, we said like this 'steel is representation of the country'. The quantity of steel was important in the past, but today, special steel which is added lots of value is more important. As a result, smaller brast furnaces become more useful these days.

I see. What do Japanese import the most? On the other side, what are products you export the most? Do you think you could improve your export?

We import the oil and gas for energy the most. On the other hand, we export cars, car-parts, and semiconductor parts. We have to put effort into finance. Our efforts for industries are running out these days. We have to change our business style.
